My Dog’s Reaction to a Traumatic Event Left Me Feeling Even More Broken

AITA for Keeping My Traumatized Dog?

My once sweet and well-behaved dog turned aggressive after witnessing a traumatic incident, leaving me torn between his past behavior and his current struggles.

Five years ago, my dog's behavior changed drastically after being locked in his crate while I was drugged and assaulted at home by someone we knew. Previously a well-mannered pet, he now exhibits aggression and fear towards men, making walks and social interactions challenging.

He's a border collie golden retriever mix, loved by all and previously well-socialized before the traumatic incident. Despite professional help and medication, his fear and aggression persist, leading to difficulties in managing his behavior.

"He's never bit anyone. When it's just us, he's the same dog he's always been."

Efforts to help him overcome his trauma have been challenging, with his behavior impacting daily activities and interactions with others, especially men.

"He's not actually aggressive, he's just still so scared of men and it makes me feel so messed up."

Despite the ongoing struggles, I continue to care for him, torn between the memories of his past behavior and the challenges of his present state.

🏠 The Aftermath

Managing my dog's behavior post-trauma has been emotionally and physically draining, impacting our daily routines and interactions.

I have to restrict his interactions with others, avoid crowded places, and constantly monitor his responses to prevent any potential harm.

The consequences of his trauma extend beyond our home, affecting our social life and creating a sense of isolation for both of us.

"It's so hard to heal from it when this just keeps reminding me how we both broke that night."

Balancing his past and present, I navigate the challenges of caring for a traumatized pet while also taking care of my own well-being.

Reflecting on our journey together, I find solace in the moments of normalcy while acknowledging the persistent challenges we face in our daily lives.
