AITA for emptying out my dad's estate basically making his will useless.

AITA for selling my loans to my stepmother and stepbrothers after my father passed away?

I, 48M, have helped my father keep his business afloat for years, but things took a turn after his passing.

Growing up, my father supported me financially, allowing me to graduate debt-free and start my own business. When he got sick, I helped him with loans to keep his company running.

My stepmother and stepbrothers, who worked at the company, never appreciated my efforts and felt entitled to more.

"I was left token sentimental gifts. I don't need the money but I could smell the bull crap."

After my father's passing, they expected me to continue the generous loan terms, which I refused.

"They wanted to keep the same deal. Basically one percent interest and really lax views on collecting payments."

I sold the loans to a competitor, leaving them to deal with a new creditor and stricter repayment terms.

🏠 The Aftermath

After the decision, my stepmother got the house and a retirement fund, while my stepbrothers inherited the company.

They approached me about the loans, only to find out I had sold them to another creditor.

Now, they have to deal with debt repayment and the financial responsibility of running the company.

"They think I'm an a**_hole for saddling them with debt instead of the solvent cash cow they thought they were getting."

The situation may have left them feeling blindsided, but it was a strategic move on my part.

💭 Emotional Reflection

In hindsight, my actions may seem harsh, but I had to protect my financial interests and make a clean break from the business.

While they may perceive me as selfish, it was a calculated business decision to ensure my own financial security.

The situation highlights the complexities of family dynamics and financial entanglements.

How would you react in this situation?

"They should have been grateful for the help rather than resentful."
