I (29F) work as a data analyst on a global team, covering a 9–5 schedule in my own time zone. One teammate, 34M, is seven hours ahead and obsessed with real-time messaging. He constantly pings me—everything from column names to font questions—often late into my night. In one week, I logged 47 after-hours messages, 13 of them between 10 and 11 p.m. Despite multiple polite requests to keep questions during my core hours, he claimed he’s “most productive at night” and that “quick questions keep momentum.”

After months of constant pings, I finally muted Slack and email at 6 p.m. sharp—and refused to break that rule, even when he shouted “urgent.”

Two weeks ago I enforced a “hard mute” rule: Slack and email silent after 6 p.m. The on-call number would ring my physical phone for true emergencies. I announced it clearly to the team, and my manager approved, since I meet every SLA. Work-life balance only works if you protect the “life” part, too.
